E-commerce

How do you optimise checkout and payments in a store?

Checkout and payments decide how many carts turn into orders. We show how we approach checkout optimisation and payment integration in e-commerce: from shortening the flow, through payment gateways, to fraud, taxes and PCI DSS.

The biggest money in e-commerce leaks out on the last few screens. The customer has browsed the catalogue, added a product to the cart, and then abandoned the order at checkout because something was too long, too unclear, or simply did not work. For a head of e-commerce or a product director, that is not a UX detail. It is direct revenue loss you can measure and win back.

In our experience, checkout optimisation and payment integration in e-commerce is a problem that sits across the frontend, the backend, payment gateways, taxes and security, not in the visual design alone. We do not promise a ready case study from your exact niche. We offer something else: engineers who have done this before, whom we plug into your team to close this area faster than it would take to build it from scratch.

Why does checkout decide conversion, and where does cart abandonment come from?

Checkout is where the stated intent to buy meets the reality of a form. The customer is already sold, so every second of friction costs real orders. Cart abandonment rarely comes from a single cause; it is usually the sum of small obstacles:

So we treat checkout as a measurable funnel, step by step, and look for the exact points where users drop off. That shifts the conversation from “let’s make it prettier” to “where exactly are we losing, and how much”.

How do you optimise the checkout itself: steps, validation, express?

A good checkout is short, predictable and forgiving. We design it so the user always knows which step they are on and how much is left. We cut the number of steps and fields to the necessary minimum, add guest checkout, and validate inline before the customer hits “pay”, rather than after the whole form is rejected.

We treat express checkout and one-click methods separately, because they lift mobile conversion the most. In practice much rides on the details: address autocomplete, remembered data, sensible error messages, and making sure a failed payment does not send the customer back to square one. Our frontend and backend developers build these on real traffic and funnel data, not on assumptions.

How do you integrate payments and payment gateways (cards, Apple Pay, local methods)?

Payment integration is the heart of the puzzle. We work with payment gateways and PSPs, bringing many methods into one coherent flow:

Technically that means a clean integration layer, handling of webhooks and asynchronous events, idempotency, and payment routing and retry rules that rescue transactions declined on the first attempt. We design it so that adding another method or another PSP does not mean rewriting the checkout, because in e-commerce this set changes every year.

How do you reduce fraud and chargebacks without blocking good customers?

This is about balance. Rules that are too loose mean losses to abuse and chargebacks; rules that are too strict block honest buyers and drag down conversion. So we wire anti-fraud engines and risk scoring into the checkout, apply 3-D Secure selectively where the risk calls for it, and tune the rules against real transaction data. We also build dispute and claim handling on the operations side, so a chargeback is not chaos but a process with a clear owner and an audit trail.

How do you handle taxes and invoices in the checkout?

Taxes and accounting documents are the part that loves to blow up a rollout just before launch. VAT and rate calculation has to be correct across countries, product types, and both B2B and B2C customers. We automate invoice generation, corrections and the link to ERP and accounting systems, and for cross-border sales we add handling of thresholds and tax rules. It is a less visible part of checkout than the “pay” button, but a mistake here costs you compliance and the finance team’s nerves, not conversion.

How do you plug in loyalty, discount codes and vouchers?

Promotions can eat your margin and your performance if done carelessly. So we treat the promotion layer as a separate, accountable mechanism:

The key is a promotion engine that calculates everything deterministically and fast, even under heavy traffic, and that cannot be gamed by cleverly combining coupons.

How do you secure payments and stay compliant with PCI DSS?

Security in payments is not optional; it is the price of entry. We design the checkout so that sensitive card data never touches your servers, using tokenisation and the payment provider’s hosted fields, which dramatically narrows your PCI DSS scope. On top of that come encryption, secrets management, segmentation and logging of payment events for audit. We treat compliance as a design requirement from day one, not a patch stuck on before the audit, because reworking it later is always more expensive.

Which skills do we provide for a checkout and payments project?

We shape the team around the specific scope, not “just in case”. On checkout and payments projects we most often staff:

Even if we do not have a case study in exactly your niche, we have people who have built checkouts, wired up gateways and fought chargebacks, and we plug them into your team as team augmentation or a dedicated team.

How do we do it at RITS?

We do it as a nearshore partner from Poland that adds skills where they are missing. In practice that means we:

Most often we work as team augmentation or a dedicated team, and where you are building from scratch, as a custom software project. We laid out the differences between these models in our article on IT engagement models.

Where to start with checkout and payment optimisation?

Start from data, not opinions. Measure where exactly in the funnel customers drop off and which payment methods are most often declined, then pick the single, most costly friction point to fix first. That defines the scope, the integration architecture and the roles you need. The rest is a matter of pace and the right team.
