For most customers, the mobile app is the bank. It is where they log in every day, pay, check their balance and contact the institution. That is why mobile banking app development is not a one-off project but a product you have to build securely, integrate with the bank’s systems, and maintain for years.
In our experience, the hard part is not “building the app”. The hard part is reconciling customer convenience, security and compliance, and integration with the bank’s core into one stable product. We have done it for a mobile banking leader, so we know where the traps are.
Why is the mobile app a bank’s most important channel today?
Because that is where the real customer relationship happens:
- it is the primary point of contact, more frequent than the branch or the website,
- it is a sales and communication channel, not just a balance viewer,
- customers compare it with the best apps on the market, not only with other banks,
- a weak app undermines trust in the whole institution.
What should a modern mobile banking app do?
The scope depends on the bank, but the foundation is shared:
- accounts and transaction history in a clear, fast interface,
- transfers and payments, including instant payments,
- real-time transaction notifications and alerts,
- self-service: handling products and cases without a branch visit,
- biometric login and authentication that is both convenient and secure,
- personalisation: content and offers tailored to the customer.
How do you keep a banking app secure and compliant (PSD2, SCA, biometrics)?
In mobile banking, security is a condition of entry, not an extra feature. In practice that means:
- strong customer authentication (SCA) compliant with PSD2,
- biometrics and multi-factor authentication (2FA),
- encryption and protection of sensitive data in the app and in transit,
- working under ISO/IEC 27001 and the realities of GDPR.
We design security in from the start, not bolt it on at the end.
What does a banking app cost, and what drives the price?
There is no single price, because cost depends on scope. The biggest drivers are:
- the number and complexity of features (more products and scenarios mean more work),
- integrations with the bank’s systems (core, payments, external systems),
- security and compliance requirements,
- two platforms (iOS and Android) plus the backend,
- maintenance and development after go-live.
So instead of a “price list”, we agree the scope and priorities with the client, then match the engagement model and team to that scope.
How do you build an app that integrates with the bank’s systems?
A mobile app is only as good as its integration with the bank’s core. The essentials are:
- integrations with core banking and payment systems,
- well-designed APIs between the app and the backend,
- migration and modernisation of legacy systems when they block progress.
On our banking projects we have built both the backend of apps for individual customers and systems migrations, so we look at the app end to end, not just the screen.
What is mobile banking app maintenance, and why isn’t go-live the end?
Go-live is the beginning, not the end. Mobile banking app maintenance covers:
- updates for new iOS and Android versions,
- ongoing security patches and threat response,
- feature development in step with business and customer needs,
- stability and performance monitoring.
This is where a standing team pays off and, where needed, a managed services model with a clear SLA.
How do we do it at RITS?
We do it as a nearshore partner from Poland, with real mobile banking experience:
- we built a next-generation mobile app from the ground up for a mobile banking leader,
- we delivered the backend of apps for individual customers and systems migrations,
- we worked in a .NET, Angular, Fullstack stack, and the client entrusted one of our engineers with the developer-lead role,
- we work with banking clients for years, which gives the product continuity and stability.
You can build the app with us as custom software (scope, budget and timeline on our side) or augment your own team with our specialists. In either case we can add an AI layer: personalisation and assistants, with people firmly in the decision loop.
Where to start with a bank’s mobile app project?
Start from product priorities and security requirements, not a feature list copied from the competition. Decide what really changes the customer experience, what compliance forces, and how to connect it to the bank’s systems. We’ll match the rest, the engagement model and the team, to that goal.
